Student Activities
MTNA Competitions
The MTNA National Competitions are the most successful and prestigious student competitions in the country. Each year, thousands of students compete for top prizes and national recognition. The purpose of the Music Teachers National Association Performance competitions is to provide educational experiences for students and teachers and to recognize exceptionally talented young artists and their teachers in their pursuit of musical excellence.
The three-tiered Junior, Senior, and Young Artist Performance Competitions begin with State Competitions. The winners/representatives of each state's competitions advance to a video-only Division Competition. Division winners compete in the National Finals at the annual MTNA National Conference. The State Competitions are considered the primary educational level with the division and national levels showcasing outstanding performance and honoring significant pedagogical achievement. Competitions include Piano, Piano Duet (Senior only), String, and Woodwind.
Honors Auditions
The PMTNM Student Honors Auditions are held at the District and State levels and provide students with an unparalleled opportunity and incentive for musical growth and understanding. Students perform in a competitive setting for qualified and impartial judges who provide careful and constructive written comments.
The program was designed to encourage and inspire students to diligently study, prepare, and present recital caliber repertoire in a polished public performance. The repertoire, dates, and general rules are determined by the PMTNM Student Honors Committee.
Performance Evaluation Program (PEP)
PEP is a great way to motivate students toward a performance goal. Students participating in PEP do not compete against one another; instead, they are evaluated individually on one of 12 different performance levels from Elementary to Advanced, accommodating various ages and musical backgrounds, including an adult category.
Independent outside music educators judge the students and provide written feedback. Auditions are coordinated locally through PMTNM-affiliated music teachers' associations and held at designated regional locations or studios. The repertoire, dates and general rules are determined by the local PEP Chair.
Music Bowl
Music Bowl is a fun, quiz-style musical event for students attending PMTNM’s state conference. It provides a lively environment for student engagement alongside the MTNA competitions, Honors Auditions, and master classes. Students compete with each other using dice and cards to choose questions. They can prepare for the event by reviewing provided study materials.
